SATELLITES RECOGNIZE CHANGES IN FORESTS
Did you know that right at this moment, there are satellites collecting valuable data on the changes on the state of the environment – both positive and negative changes caused by phenomena such as climate acts, forest fires and storm wind damages?
The forest change detection service uses this information for example to assist supervising officials in detecting illegal cuttings, to estimate the extent of damages that have occurred in different areas, and to monitor of changes in the state of environment quicker than before.

The Core of Change Detection Services is Self-learning AI Engine
The Change Detection Service developed by Bitcomp uses the most recent satellite data, processed in cloud automatically utilizing machine learning algorithms. Earth monitoring enables objective, quick and accurate detection of environmental changes and risk predictions relevant to your business. This allows the user to get the information faster and in a more accessible format than before. Thanks to the current, remotely acquired information it is possible to efficiently target the costly field work to where it is actually needed.
The analysis products are available as map layers (WMS/WFS) or shape-files. They are fully customizable to customers’ needs and they can be included both in Bitcomp’s own or 3rd party web or mobile applications via data interfaces.
Remotely monitoring the changes in the environment can benefit operators on several sectors. Here are some examples:
Cutting Areas
There is a need to track illegal logging and forest shrinkage in many countries. Change Detection Service offers automatic detection of thinnings and clear-cuts using Sentinel 2 satellite images (optic).
Forest Damages
The service allows you to quickly estimate damages caused by storm winds or insects. Potential problems in vegetation health detected earlier and possibility to take actions before the damages spread wider.
Up-to-date map showing the areas, where the water stress is high (potential bark beetle risk areas) .
Customer Story
Finnish Forest Centre
The Finnish Forest Center is one of the first users of the Change Detection Service. They rolled out a national system of tracking forest logging by satellite. Authorities will be able to compare the maps it generates with logging notifications from landowners and timber owners.
