Satellites are collecting valuable data on state of the environment – both positive and negative changes caused by climate change such as increasing storms, insect damages and forest fires. We utilize satellite data and combine them with other data sources into smart data to be used for better decision making, more efficient workflows and more sustainable environment.
Bitcomp Oy has long history on providing satellite monitoring based services for large areas. Our Change Detection Service has been in production since Summer 2019 and has been used since that by Finnish Forest Centre for monitoring legality of cuttings in whole Finland.
Our AI based Smart Analytics contains following data sets:

AI based forest monitoring services developed by Bitcomp uses the most recent satellite data, processed in cloud automatically utilizing machine learning algorithms. Earth monitoring enables objective, quick and accurate detection of environmental changes and risk predictions relevant to your business. This allows the user to get the information faster and in a more accessible format than before. Thanks to the current, remotely acquired information it is possible to efficiently target the costly field work to where it is actually needed.
The analysis products are available as map layers or as files. They can be included both in Bitcomp’s own or 3rd party web or mobile applications via data interfaces.

Bitcomp’s AI services have been developed since 2015, starting from pilot projects with drone surveys and extending to country-level monitoring systems which we have currently in production. We have been participating to several R&D projects, such as European Space Agency (ESA) funded Envinavigator demonstration project (2020-2022) where satellite monitoring services were further developed and piloted with forest owner associations in Finland and Germany.
We are currently participating a large Eco2adapt project (EU Horizon), which aims that aims to help stakeholders manage forests to optimize social and ecological resilience. Our interest in the project is in improving AI algorithms for forest vitality and damage detection.
Finnish Forest Centre
The Finnish Forest Center is one of the first users of the Change Detection Service. They rolled out a national system of tracking forest logging by satellite. Authorities will be able to compare the maps it generates with logging notifications from landowners and timber owners.
